If you're an Australian tradie, you've probably heard the line: every missed call is a missed job. It's a good line. It's also a wild oversimplification.
A missed call isn't worth zero. It also isn't worth a full job. The actual expected value of one missed call sits somewhere between A$280 and A$1,800 depending on the trade, the job size, and how that customer was going to reach you next. The honest answer matters because the number you assign to a missed call is what makes - or kills - the case for fixing it.
This post is the maths. We'll model what one missed call is actually worth across the five biggest Australian trades, where the four-in-ten unanswered figure comes from, why the cost compounds harder than people think, and what "answering every call" actually requires in 2026.
What's a missed call actually worth?
The right way to value a missed call isn't what the job would have paid. It's the expected value: the average job value, multiplied by the conversion rate of that call, minus the cost of the work to deliver it.

Weighted across a typical sole-trader's call mix, the expected value of a single inbound call sits around A$700. Plumbers run lower per-call but get more volume; builders run higher per-call but lose far more in the qualification stage.
Two things tradies routinely under-count when they do this maths themselves:
- Repeat work and referrals. That A$260 plumbing repair isn't the whole story - the customer who likes the job calls again, sends two mates, and over 18 months the cohort is worth roughly 2.4× the initial transaction. Industry retention benchmarks from HIA's Trades Snapshot support this multiplier.
- The caller's next phone call. A missed call doesn't go nowhere. It goes to your competitor - typically the second listing on Google Maps in your service area. That competitor isn't just getting the one job; they're getting the customer's future referrals too.

The four-in-ten number, unpacked
The claim that "40% of after-hours calls to Australian tradies go to voicemail" deserves a closer look - because if it's wrong, everything else in this post falls apart.
It's not wrong. But it's a blended figure. Here's how it breaks down based on aggregate Australian mobile telephony data and trades-software pickup-rate reports:
- 9am-5pm Monday-Friday: ~85% pickup rate. Tradies do answer the phone, especially the ute-mounted "just pulled up to job site" crowd.
- 5pm-10pm weekdays: ~55% pickup rate. Dinner, kids, finishing paperwork, mowing your own lawn - pickup drops sharply.
- Saturday 7am-4pm: ~70% pickup rate. Saturday morning is half-working for most tradies; afternoon picks back up to weekday levels by 2pm.
- Sunday + any after-hours emergency window: ~35% pickup rate. By Sunday afternoon, almost nobody is picking up. This is where most of the "lost" calls cluster - and where the highest-margin emergency work also tends to come from.
Weighted across the full week, you get roughly 65% pickup, 35% missed. Round it to 4-in-10 unanswered after-hours and you're directionally correct.
The cluster matters. Of the 4-in-10 missed calls, more than half hit during the high-margin weekend-emergency window. That's why the dollar cost compounds: missed weekday-afternoon repair calls are mostly recoverable on Monday; missed Saturday-night emergency calls are gone.
Why the cost stacks faster than people think
Spreadsheet-modelling tradies often plug in "4 missed calls × A$700 = A$2,800/month" and move on. That's the obvious headline number. It's also wrong by a factor of three.
The actual monthly cost is closer to A$12,000 for a representative sole-trader plumber or sparkie in metropolitan Australia, for three reasons:
- Call volume is bigger than tradies estimate. Tradify's 2024 vendor data shows the average active sole-trader-plus-apprentice gets 45-60 inbound calls per month, not the 20-25 most tradies will tell you when asked. The under-estimate comes from people not counting voicemails or hang-ups. At 50 calls/month and 4-in-10 missed, that's 20 missed calls a month, not 4.
- The high-margin calls miss disproportionately. Emergency callouts cluster in low-pickup windows. Run the maths: 20 missed calls × A$900 expected value × 1.4 lost-referral factor (heavily discounted) = A$25,200/month before any retention adjustments. Even halving that for plausibility lands you at A$12,000+/month - and that's the conservative end.
This is also why "I missed one call, but it was probably nothing" feels true to a tradie at 7pm on a Friday and is the single most expensive mental shortcut in the entire trade economy.
What "answering every call" actually requires
There are five honest ways to never miss a call. None of them are equal:
- Take the phone everywhere yourself. Free, miserable. Bad for marriages, terrible for safety on a job site, and you're going to fail on Sundays anyway.
- Hire a part-time admin person. A$28-A$35/hour, A$1,800-A$2,500/month for 15 hours/week. Doesn't cover Sundays or 10pm Tuesdays. Works for someone who can also do quotes, invoicing, and follow-ups.
